Characteristics of Majja-dhatu

Majja-dhatu encompasses the structures contained within the bones, including the bone marrow, as well as the nervous system in the form of the brain and spinal cord and nervous tissue. One of the important functions attributed to majja is therefore the filling of internal spaces: the spinal cord is contained within the vertebral column, the brain within the cranial cavity, and bone marrow within the bones.

The classical Ayurvedic sources describe majja-dhatu as follows:

  • qualities — unctuousness and softness;
  • predominant element — water;
  • predominant dosha — kapha;
  • associated tissue — hair of the head;
  • waste products — tears and fatty secretions accumulating in the corners of the eyes;
  • functions — moisturizing the body and providing strength, filling the bones, and nourishing the subsequent tissue — shukra-dhatu.

Bone marrow (BM) is a tissue located within the spongy portions and medullary cavities of bones. Its mass accounts for approximately 3–6% of total body weight, corresponding to approximately 1.6–3.7 kg. Two types of bone marrow are distinguished — red and yellow. These represent two functional states of the same organ, which possesses a significant capacity for regeneration. Modern medicine has also made bone marrow transplantation possible.

Red bone marrow is the primary site of hematopoiesis — the process through which new blood cells are produced to replace cells that have reached the end of their lifespan. The highest concentration of hematopoietic stem cells is found in red bone marrow, where they may account for up to half of the relevant cellular population.

Yellow bone marrow develops from red bone marrow and therefore has a similar basic structure. However, it contains a greater proportion of adipose tissue, which gives it its characteristic yellow color. Its principal function is to serve as a reserve for hematopoiesis, particularly in situations involving substantial blood loss.

The human nervous system (NS) is divided into the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The central nervous system is the principal component of the nervous system and consists of two major structures: the brain and spinal cord. Its primary function is to regulate and coordinate numerous vital processes throughout the body, making efficient and well-coordinated nervous system function essential.

The peripheral nervous system consists of more than 100 billion neurons extending from the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body, including the internal organs, sensory organs, mucous membranes, muscles, and skin. Its principal role is to facilitate communication between the CNS and peripheral tissues, allowing the body's functions to remain coordinated and responsive.

How to Maintain Majja-dhatu in Balance

Healthy majja-dhatu is traditionally associated with an appropriate perception of one's surroundings and the proper functioning of the muscles. On the mental level, healthy majja is considered to support mental resilience, prevent a sense of inner depletion, and contribute to the experience of one's own existence and intrinsic value.

Depletion of the tissue may manifest as:

  • weakness;
  • hair loss;
  • impaired vision;
  • disorders affecting the bone marrow, including leukemia.

Excess or aggravation of the tissue may manifest as:

  • a sensation of heaviness in the eyes and throughout the body;
  • enlargement of the joints;
  • ulcerative skin processes that may be difficult to treat.

According to Ayurveda, the formation and nourishment of the tissues takes place sequentially, with each preceding dhatu contributing to the nourishment and development of the subsequent tissue. Following this principle, majja is formed through the nourishment of asthi-dhatu, the bone tissue. This process can therefore be considered in the context of the specific relationship between these two tissues.

Ultimately, Ayurveda emphasizes that health and harmonious functioning depend upon the balance of all doshas and dhatus. If tissue nourishment is compromised at an earlier stage, this imbalance may subsequently affect the entire sequence of tissue formation. The first tissue, rasa-dhatu, serves as the foundation of this process and must therefore be properly formed and nourished, as it provides the nutritional basis for the subsequent tissues. Proper nourishment at this initial stage supports the healthy transformation and development of the tissues that follow.

It is also important to recognize the fundamental role of digestion in the Ayurvedic understanding of health and disease. By improving dietary patterns and establishing healthier eating habits, one may support the gradual purification and proper nourishment of the tissues.

According to the traditional Ayurvedic model, while the first two tissues — rasa and rakta — are purified within approximately 1–2 days, the process becomes progressively longer for the subsequent tissues. Muscle and adipose tissues are said to undergo this process within approximately one month, while bone tissue and bone marrow require approximately six months. The purification of shukra-dhatu is traditionally described as requiring at least one year.
